Uva Ursi

Uva ursi is a plant whose leaves are used to produce medicine. This fruit is passionately loved by bears, which explains its Latin meaning, "uva ursi", ("bear's grape"). Uva ursi is used mainly for urinary tract disorders, such as infections of the bladder, kidney, and urethra; frequent urination; urine with excess of uric acid; swelling or inflammation of the urinary tract; painful urination; etc. Uva ursi is used for the treatment of bronchitis and constipation.
Uva ursi I used in combination with peppermint and hops to treat patients with painful urination and compulsive bedwetting. The medicine works by reducing bacteria in the urine. It also decreases swelling and any form of inflammation, has a drying effect on the tissues. One research offers that taking uva ursi with dandelion by mouth can reduce the frequency of UTIs in women. But as it isn't clear whether this kind of use is safe, uva ursi shouldn't be used for a long time. There is the need for more evidence to estimate the effectiveness of uva ursi.

Uva ursi is safe for most adults if it's used for a short period of time. However, it may result in some side effects such as nausea, stomach discomfort, vomiting, and a greenish-brown urine color. High doses or usage of this product for too long can cause eye problems, liver damage, convulsions, breathing problems, and even death. Uva ursi should not be given to children, otherwise little ones can suffer from serious liver problems.
Pregnant and breast-feeding ladies should avoid using uva ursi as it might start labor in case or pregnancy and be not safe for a nursing baby. Uva ursi includes a chemical that tends to thin the eye retina. This can be very harmful for patients whose retinas are too thin. So, people with this problem are advised to avoid using this medicine.
Lithium can interact with uva ursi, that's why it should not be used together with this therapy. Uva ursi acts as a "diuretic" and its taking might decrease the body's ability of clearing from lithium.
